freedom of speech

we just had a small "meeting". i came back home with a description of the 2 young girls at the shop, QUIET. they barely speak. not just to me, but also to each other.

i can see, they tried to communicate, to throw ideas across, but just didn't manage to open up their tied up mouths.

why?

is it because it's the same situation at home? by saying too much, they will be scolded by the parents? resulting to "i would rather not talk" attitude?

was it because during their schooldays, teachers labeled this group of "kids who speak too much" as disobedient, naughty and playful? apparent rejection given on answers which were incorrect? curiousness being ignored? negative remarks will be given during report card day?

or even worse, is it caused by the country's heritage, that we, the ordinary people were so used of being submissive to the ones who are much more in power?

hmmm...
